leant by two
leaned by two is a piece of furniture made of birch multiplex, which can be leaned seamlessly against a wall by two massive oak wood legs. Placed in the hallway, the upper drawers can quickly store hats, scarves, keys and other small items, while the lower corpus offers space for shoes. The doors and drawers of the two separate corpus parts are characterised by a coherent wood grain and can be opened handle-free using push-to-open. To minimise the thickness of the edges, all the fronts fit into a milled rabbet, creating a slim edge of 5mm.
Study project I've got my hands full, but I really need to... - or my first carcase furniture I Coordinated by Prof. Klaus Michel I Artistic member of staff Timo Jakobi I Summer semester semester 2021
The semester assignment was to design a piece of furniture in the sense of a journeyman's piece, including the specifications of at least one drawer and one door.
My furniture should offer space for shoes, hats, scarves and keys and be placed under a clothes rail in my flat hallway. Therefore, the width of 1.20m was already defined at the beginning. I liked the idea of separating the upper corpus and the lower corpus . This makes the furniture look less heavy and massive. While you can put shoes in the bottom shelves, which are closed by doors, the two drawers can be filled with caps, scarves and keys. The two legs take over the function of connecting the two parts of the corpus with each other. To create the illusion of a 5mm thin frame, I milled a rabbet into the exterior sides, into which the fronts can close.
The next two months I spent in the university's own wood workshop building my piece of furniture. I sawed all the multiplex boards to size, gave the edges a 45° mitre and milled all the necessary grooves. I drilled holes for flat dowels with the groove cutter. Small inaccuracies could be detected and corrected when I put the two drawers together several times. Next, I built the two drawers and attached them to the inside of the upper furniture corpus using push-to-open pull-outs. For the fronts I sawed the multiplex boards in a way that they formed a continuous wood grain. Finally, I built the two furniture legs, which consist of two oak slats connected at an angle.
Besides the realisation of the furniture design, exact 1:1 plans had to be made.
